2017 has been a pivotal year in the development of the IBD Registry. Continued hard work from IBD teams across the country has resulted in 33,321 patient records being uploaded by 53 sites.

Thanks to an idea from our Industry Working Group, we set up a data entry fund, and supported 23 sites with a grant of £2,000 to cover additional hours. This initiative has been well received, and has enabled teams to improve their performance against the biologics KPIs.

Data visualisation tools, developed with the RCP’s clinical effectiveness unit, were launched in the summer. The tool uses real-time run charts to allow teams to compare their performance against national results.

In May and June, the IBD Registry Roadshow visited 6 locations and was attended by 120 clinicians from 62 hospitals. The effectiveness of this approach was recognised in July, when the 2016 Roadshow won the Communiqué award for Excellence in Healthcare Collaboration and Partnership; later in the year it also received a high commendation at the PMEA awards.

Keith Bodger and Mustafa Shawihdi at Liverpool University have produced the first quarterly reports to support sites in their quality improvement work, and the first HES reports are due to be released shortly.

November saw the launch of our Field Support Programme: field based industry personnel are already working with 11 IBD teams to address local barriers.

Sadly, 2017 was also the year in which we lost our friend and colleague, IBD Registry Development Lead Richard Driscoll. Richard’s positive impact on the lives of people with IBD was enormous, and will continue to be felt for years to come. We plan to commemorate Richard at next year’s BSG annual meeting.

Looking forward to 2018

In 2018, the Registry aims to become an independent not-for-profit organisation, with the support of the BSG, Crohn’s and Colitis UK and the Royal College of Physicians. The Registry’s main focus remains on delivering useful local data that helps IBD teams to provide better care to their patients.
